#96 - Take a Class at East End Arts Council School

Local arts school gives residents an outlet to explore their creative sides.

Right in the heart of downtown Riverhead is the East End Arts Council, a non-profit organization whose mission is to "bring the arts to everyone and inspire our communities.."  If you are looking for something to occupy yourself for the last bit of the cold winter months into the spring, perhaps exploring your artistic side is just the right thing to do. 

The School of the Arts is located on East Main Street in a circa 1850 home to the east of the gallery/gift shop. Classes, some of which are geared toward children, others toward adults, range in fees. You do not need to be a member to register, however class fees are either moderately reduced or drastically reduced depending on the individual class. Some classes have begun, but many will only be starting over the next few weeks, so registration is ongoing.  Some are more of a workshop, while others span several weeks. The classes are broken down into various sections and details can be found in their guide:

HOMESCHOOL:

 An entire series for homeschoolers which include art, studio art, theatre and story telling, as well as homeschool music lessons.

ART FOR CHILDREN:

 Presents options such as art history, drawing and digital photography. One class geared for ages 8-11 is "Monsters, Mermaids and Mythology" which combines an exploration of ancient and contemporary myth with clay hand building.  

DRAWING:

For teens and adults, there are 7 classes in drawing, which include sketching, creative journaling, drawing as a foundation for painting, life drawing of a human figure and drawing and painting flowers.

PAINTING:

Ten classes in painting with watercolor, oil, acrylics and even a class in East Asian Brush Painting ,which teaches how to paint using bamboo brushes, as well as abstract painting for adults.


MIXED MEDIA:

An intriguing offering of classes, the first of which is list is "The Spiritual in Art." This class explores ancient art including primitive culture and even voodoo dolls.  Also offered is a class in Mandalas, basic pastel and mixed media sampler workshops.

FILM, ANIMATION & PHOTOGRAPHY:

Learn the ins and outs of filmmaking, story boarding and or take a photo expedition.

PRINTMAKING:

EEAC had their own printing press available for certified members to use to reproduce their art. A series of classes is offered to certify and teach techniques in printmaking. 

MUSIC:

One of the highlights of the School of Arts is their comprehensive music programs. Private lessons as well as choir and ensembles are available. EEAC also has their own recording studio and teaches classes in using this as well. 

THEATRE:

Acting and improv for all ages.
