Police Break Up Huge Brawl in Riverhead

Over 750 kids were engaged in "disorderly" conduct, cops say.

Over 750 young people gathered on North Oakland Drive in Riverhead early Sunday morning, fighting, blocking traffic and engaging in disorderly conduct, police say.

Riverhead Town Police report that at approximately 3:10 a.m. on Sunday morning, they responded to reports of a "large disturbance" on North Oakland Drive. Upon arrival, they found over 750 "unruly" youths congregated, engaged in disorderly conduct, and blocking traffic.

While no cause for the fighting has been determined, Riverhead police say they do not believe gang activity was involved. Police said Sunday morning that such events do happen from time to time, after young people leave a party or other event, but that the reports do not usually include such a large number of youths.
