Suffolk DA: Ignore Serial Killer Rumors

In an uncommon move, Suffolk County District Attorney Thomas Spota has come forward to quell rumors that have been swirling for weeks about a possible break in the Long Island serial killer case.

Spota said in a statement that, “Unfounded, anonymous Internet postings or rumors about who may be a suspect should be given the appropriate weight they deserve by those who read them,” Spota said.

“It should be remembered that this type of unsubstantiated ‘gossip’ can cause substantial harm and emotional trauma, not only to the members of the families mentioned on the Internet postings, but also to the families of the victims,” he continued.

Spota said in the release his office has been inundated during the last few weeks with hundreds of media inquiries.

At least 10 bodies or sets of remains of women murdered by a suspected serial killer have been found both in Manorville and on Gilgo Beach in Babylon Town since 2010.

Spota said that while the district attorney’s office and Suffolk County Police are confident the “long, complicated, difficult investigation” will eventually conclude successfully, the results will be based on facts and evidence, not rumor.

Patch will not report on specific Internet rumors out of respect for family, friends and others whose lives have been impacted by the speculation.
