Town of Riverhead Orders Mandatory Evacuations

Those living in low-lying areas and mobile homes are required to seek shelter from the storm.

The Town of Riverhead has issued a mandatory evacuation for residents of Riverhead living in coastal or low-lying areas prone to flooding, or those in unstrapped mobile homes.

With Hurricane Irene's effects set to hit sometime around midnight and sustain hurricane force winds until about 3 p.m. Sunday, the town is urging residents to take the storm seriously.

"It is imperative that residents begin to prepare now, while there is time to stock up on supplies, take measures to protect homes, and clearly think through how to protect family and loved ones," the statement said.

Those looking to evacuate are advised to stay with family or friends. The town has also opened two shelters in conjuction with the Red Cross, one at and a second, pet-friendly shelter in the Woodland building at the .

While emergency services will be too busy to assist with evacuations, residents that need to evacuate and have special needs can contact 631-727-4500 for assistance.

The town recommend those heading to shelters to bring a pillow, blanket, flashlight, batteries, toiletries, medications, food and bottled water. Even those remaining at home are asked to have supplies that will last at least 5-7 days.

"When going to a pet-friendly shelter in addition to the items mentioned above, be sure to bring pet food, water, cat litter and litter boxes, supply of petโ€™s medication, vaccination records, plastic bags (to handle animal waste), portable carriers and leashes," the statement continued.
