The organization will host a fundraiser on Saturday at Raphael Vineyard in Peconic.
East End Arts is having a big birthday -- the organization will mark 40 years in 2012. And to celebrate, the organization will host a sold-out gala "Fantastic at Forty" on Saturday at Raphael Vineyard in Peconic, featuring a performance by the R&B and doo-wop group The Cleftones and silent auctions of artwork, and honoring a founding member of the group and legendary international sculptor Robert Berks. "East End Arts has gained a reputation as a significant force in the arts on Long Island over the past 40 years," said East End Arts Executive Director Patricia Snyder. "It is so appropriate the EEA is celebrating its 40th year on the heels of being a recipient of the highly regarded Bank of America Neighborhood Builders Award." East End …

Meet your favorite local authors at Martha Clara on Sunday.
Local writers from the worlds of fiction, non-fiction, poetry, and children’s literature will appear at Martha Clara Vineyards in Riverhead on Sunday from noon to 4 p.m. for the fifth-annual Long Island Authors Group Book Fair. Writers like Tom Gahan, who released his first novel “Harmony Bay” last April, will be at hand for a meet and greet and a book signing. “Everyone in the group either lives on Long Island or grew up here,” Gahan said. The group will also be raffling off a Kindle e-reader and will offer wine tastings and live music. Other Long Island authors like Rob Scott, a Brooklyn native-turned-Long Islander who celebrated his debut novel based on the Vietnam War, will also be there, as will children’s author Yvonne Capitelli. …

Esprit de France opened last week on Route 25 in Aquebogue; artwork focuses on eclectic and international.
Paris natives Matthieu and Laure Chatin are no different from many who have made a trip to the North Fork, in that they came for the first time and fell in love with its natural beauty, proximity to the water, and relatively short drive to the hustle and bustle of New York City. But they aren't like many who have made a trip to the North Fork, in that they uprooted their life on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean to move to an area and start a business where they know no one. "We said it was the right place, and right moment to move and start something else," said Matthieu. After moving to Mattituck in June of 2010, the Chatins celebrated last Thursday the opening of their offering to the North Fork, Esprit de France - a gallery on Route…

Earlier this month, the North Fork Education Initiative signed a lease with the East Ends Arts Council School to open an early elementary program in downtown Riverhead.
With the lease signed just over a week ago with the East End Arts in Riverhead, the North Fork Education Initiative’s dream of a holistic school based on arts education on the North Fork is a few months away from being a reality. Elizabeth Casey Searl, co-executive director, said the Riverhead location is ideal because the Peconic Community School’s curriculum is arts-based and she is looking forward to a mutually beneficial agreement between the two groups. The school has offered them a large classroom, an arts room, a deck and the grounds to use. She said the proximity to the Long Island Science Center, Community Garden and Long Island Aquarium is crucial for the school's plan as well. “We plan to make the whole area our classroom,” …

A Friday night open mic night at Jason's Vineyard is picking up with a variety of local musical talent.
Every Friday night, two musical acts get to win “North Fork Idol” at Jason’s Vineyard. The prize? Bottles of wine, of course. “It’s become such a great place to showcase local talent,” said host Kevin “Cowboy” Coppola. “But it’s also created a buzz for people from other venues to book the talent for themselves.” “North Fork Idol” takes place every Friday from 6:30 to 11 p.m. on the upper studio-apartment-like level of Jason’s Vineyard in Jamesport. Coppola ran an open mic night at Borghese Vineyards in Cutchogue beginning about eight months ago every Tuesday but moved the night and the venue early in the year. As a resident of Southold, he says he understands how tough it is for any local venue to bring in music on their own dime these …

Opening reception for "William King: Inside the Artist's Studio" is being held on Thursday at Suffolk County Community College's Lyceum Gallery.
An opening reception for East Hampton artist William King is being held on Thursday at Suffolk County Community College's Lyceum Gallery. "William King: Inside the Artist's Studio" has been on display since March 5 and will remain through April 6. Thursday's reception will run from 4 to 6 p.m. to recognize the work of the 87-year-old East Hampton sculptor, with light refreshments being served. According to a recent New York Times article, King's fascination with sculpting began as a youth in southern Florida, sculpting coral in Coconut Grove. The article quotes King as saying, "“I started sculpting by whittling coral rock in the backyard. I used a screwdriver for a chisel and a claw hammer for a mallet.” His works have since appeared at …

Jason Hefter, Riverhead High School class of 1990, publishes debut novel, "Hump Day."
Jason Hefter remembers the days of playing football in the backyard of the Riverhead Elks Lodge, grabbing a shake at Papa Nick's, and racing his friends up Roanoke Avenue in his "Oldsmo-Buick" like it was yesterday. Fast forward, and the vice president of Riverhead High School's class of 1990 is making his way back to town to celebrate the publishing of his first novel, Hump Day. This Wednesday marks a book signing at Sidewalk in New York City's East Village, and March 28, he comes back to Riverhead for a signing at the Riverhead Project. The 39-year-old Hefter, currently an East Quogue resident, has made his way from North Carolina, to Australia, to New York City to Los Angeles on the strength of his screenwriting abilities, and Hump Day …
