Pols hope the cost savings will keep the company from taking its 1,600 jobs off Island.
Hoping to prevent the loss of 1,600 jobs on Long Island, the Suffolk County Industrial Development Agency on Thursday floated an incentive package worth millions to Broadridge Financial - a public company that has threatened to move off-Island if officials didn’t find a way to help it trim costs. If the financial services company takes the offer - which its board will decide on in June - then it'll come as a disappointment to officials in New Jersey, Virginia, Florida, Ohio and Texas who were trying to woo the $2.2 billion company into moving to their states. The Suffolk IDA said the incentive deal includes sales tax exemptions on $75 million in equipment purchases related to its renovation of its two Edgewood buildings, as well as a 15-…

The town's historic district was established in 2006.
Residents who live in the town's historic district can paint their home any color. The myth that a home in the historic destrict can't be painted is one Richard Wines, president of the town's landmark and preservation commission, seeks to shatter with a new educational outreach for residents. Wines came before the town board at a weekly work session on Thursday to discuss a draft letter to be sent to all property owners in the town's historic district -- with an eye toward raising awareness. Councilwoman Jodi Giglio said while the downtown historic district was designated by the town board in 2006, many residents who live in the area do not know exactly what that means. "People don't know that they are in the historic district and, if they…

Residents of Flanders and Riverside are expected to turn out Monday to discuss a study for a possible new sewer district that could help breathe new life into their communities. Suffolk County Legislator Jay Schneiderman and consultants Camp, Dresser & McKee and H2M will be onhand to discuss the parameters of the Flanders Riverside Corridor Sewering Feasiblity Study, commissioned by Suffolk County for $250,000. Congressional hopeful outlines plans to bolster small business.
The son of a single mother, Randy Altschuler says he learned firsthand about hard work and discipline. A graduate of Princeton with an MBA from Harvard, Altschuler, the Republican congressional candidate hoping to unseat incumbent Democrat Congressman Tim Bishop in the next election, spoke to the Riverhead Chamber of Commerce at a luncheon at Martha Clara Vineyards on Thursday. Altschuler, the co-founder and executive chairman of CloudBlue Technologies, Inc. -- a firm, he said, that has created 300 jobs in the United States --said, first and foremost, "I am a business person." To that end, Altschuler hosted three press conferences this week -- including one at Enterprise Park at Calverton -- and intends to visit local chambers of commerce…
New phones are on the agenda in Riverhead.
The phone system at Riverhead Town Hall is poised for a facelift. Members of the town board met with representatives of Black Box Network Services at their weekly work session on Thursday to discuss ways to revamp an aging phone system that has been in place since the 1970s. The overhaul, said Paul Winklarek, senior account executive of Black Box Network Services, could result in savings for the town. To start, after an audit, it appears Riverhead Town is due approximately $37,500 in rebates for monies the municipality has been paying for phone lines that are no longer used, including phone lines that ran to 201 Howell Avenue, as well as in overbilling charges. Next, Winklarek discussed a proposal to upgrade the town's phone system to …

Some say the proposal to dub the road "Peconic Highway" is in direct contradiction to their goals for Flanders.
Senator Ken LaValle introduced legislation recently that would rename a portion of New York State Route 24 "Peconic Highway." Not everyone applauds the initiative, however. Vince Taldone, president of the Flanders, Riverside and Northampton Community Association, said he was not in favor of the new moniker for the roadway. "I would personally oppose it," he said, noting that he had not yet discussed the concept with FRNCA members. According to Taldone, a meeting was held recently with New York State Assemblyman Fred Thiele and others, including representatives of the New York State Department of Transportation, to discuss long-range efforts to create more of a "neighborhood" feel in Flanders. The goal, Taldone said, is "to make it less of…
