#92 - Bring in Spring at Grangebel Park

A newly renovated park is a great place to spend a spring day.

According to Thomas Stark's Riverhead: The Halcyon Years, Timothy M. Griffing built the three-acre Grangebel Park in downtown Riverhead in the late 1880's and named the park after his three daughters - Grace, Angeline and Mabel. All that remains of the ordinal design is the foundation to what was once a  tall tower which overlooked all of Riverhead. The tower provided scenic and expansive views of the Peconic River and its surrounding area but was demolished around the mid 1940's.

With over $1,000,000 in federal funding, the park was recently renovated with new walkways, a new fishway, picnic tables, benches, lighting and a beautiful paved pavilion. (Watch a video of recent alewife migration here). Pilings in the park are carved into a mostly Indian motif. The park has undergone a complete transformation since it became a target of the town to beautify. This spring will reveal the true beauty of the hard work, landscaping and vision of all those who knew the park could be spectacular.

So this spring, as the weather is finally becoming nice, why not talk a walk through the park and be one of the first to enjoy the fine scenic area? Play on the new chess and checker board table, enjoy the new walkways, take a seat and relax, or watch the waterfalls and see if you can see any fish passing through enjoying the new park as well.
