#98 - Visit Riverhead Free Library - More Than Just Books!

Use your library resources to get healthy, find a new job, socialize, get help on homework or learn a new skill.

Hot or cold, sun or snow, theis a wonderful place to visit any time of year. It is the wealthiest source of information and resources in town with an extensive list of offerings for the community. It is a great resource for thousands of books, with an extensive DVD and video library. It has a beautiful children's room and computers available for free usage to patrons. But one of the unique highlights of our library is the amount of programs and community services available to everybody of all ages - from children (click for some tips if you're bringing your kids), to teens, to seniors.

Many of the offered programs and services are free of charge. Some of these classes available teach how to use your computer and modern technology - a daunting task for many - such as iPods, Facebook, using the internet and even how to use email or write up a Microsoft Word document. Lessons in how to write a resume and use social networking are also offered. You can even get free tax counseling and learn about dental care for your pet. The library is also the home of many hobby clubs, such as stamp, knitting and of course, book clubs with movies and discussion groups.

Teens and children's programs are some of the best around with a wonderful children's department and staff. There are teen game nights, books clubs, movies and crafts. For younger kids, you will find age-appropriate Mommy & Me classes, socializing opportunities, crafts, story time and interactive classes with special dogs and other various animals. One unique program Riverhead library offers is the "Book and Tail" in which children takes turns reading to certified therapy dogs.

There are only a few programs which charge a fee (always reasonable) and those may be fitness, crafts and cooking classes or special skills (often just the cost of materials), as well as bus trips to various locations. In March and April, the bus trips will be to New York City. Registration for programs is available online or in person. Most require pre-registration, however some are walk-in.

In addition to classes, patrons can participate in, or view, an exhibit. There are ongoing photography and art exhibits by local artists and varying art/photo competitions throughout the year. Coming up is a High School Teen Art Show.

A special service available from the library is the capability to manage your library services online. You can request books/media, download music, renew or extend borrowing and even pay yours fines, all online. The website has a fully searchable database for borrowing items as well as programs.
