A New Crop of Beagles Arrive at Kent

It's beagle season once again in Riverhead.

At the end of each hunting season, beagles show up across the North Fork and Riverhead area.  The dogs, often left behind by hunters, are picked up as strays.

This week Riverhead Animal Control picked up three beagles as strays while one beagle was surrendered to Kent Animal Shelter.

"Either the hunters are done with them, or the dogs are not good hunters or they take off," Lisa Lewin of Kent Animal Shelter said. "When we get them they are usually not spayed, not neutered, not microchipped."

Of the recent beagle arrivals, Riverhead Animal Control adopted out one beagle and sent two to stay at the Kent shelter. Kent has since adopted two of the beagles, leaving one beagle behind.

That beagle, Larry, is joined by a litter of beagle/jack russell puppies, ready to find their forever home.

"Beagles are normally adopted quickly," Lewin said. "They are sweet, friendly, family dogs."

The beagles at the shelter are spayed/neutered, vacinated, microchipped and given fecal exams and temperment tests.  The adoption fee is $300.

The same is true for the 10 week old beagle/jack russell puppies. The puppies were brought to Kent from a high kill shelter in the south.  They are very thankful to have escaped the high kill shelter and are ready to use their puppy energy to show it.

If you are interested in adopting either the puppies or Larry the beagle, visit the Kent Animal Shelter in Calverton. The shelter is open seven days a week between 10-4.
