Monday is Columbus Day, a holiday that celebrates the discovery of the New World by Italian explorer Christopher Columbus in 1492.

Here's a handy look at what's open and closed around town on Columbus Day.

All schools in New York State are closed, including the Riverhead Central School District.

The Riverthead Free Library is open.

On Long Island, all federal, state and local government offices are closed, including the Department of Motor Vehicles and the county courts.

There is no U.S. Postal Service delivery and only minimal postal services available.

Town of Riverhead offices are closed, but many town parks and public facilities are open. Garbage pickup is normal.

The Tanger Outlet Center in Riverhead is open, with a great 20th Annual Breast Cancer Awareness Event going on, with savings for shoppers.

Most banks are closed, but have the option to stay open.

The New York Stock Exchange is open. The bond markets are closed.

The Long Island Rail Road generally operates on a normal schedule on Columbus Day.
