Finding Your New Furry Friend in 2011

The new year brings new possibilities. Could a new pet be in your future?

A new year means new possibilities.  For some of you, one possibility may be an addition to your family.  This week, Four Legged and Furry will highlight four shelters/rescue groups active in the Riverhead area.  All four of these organizations offer pet adoptions year round, giving you and your family the opportunity to find the next member of your family.

The Town of Riverhead Animal Shelter

The Riverhead animal shelter, located on Youngs Avenue, is open seven days a week from 8 a.m. – 4 p.m.  Dogs are available for adoption from the shelter year round, some of which are  on Riverhead Patch. Families or individuals considering adopting a new pet are encouraged to visit the animals at the shelter in Riverhead. If a trip to the shelter is not immediately a possibility, the cute canines can also be seen on the town shelter's Petfinder site.

Kent Animal Shelter

The Kent shelter is a private, not-for-profit shelter based out of Calverton. Kent's adoption center is open seven days a week from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. Each day Kent normally has 100 or more animals available for adoption. Kent also offers low cost spayed/neutering for animals as well as a retirement home for cats that survive their owners.  Visit the Kent shelter in Calverton or check out the Kent website.

SAVES, Inc.

The SAVES, Inc. policy is to spay, alter, vaccinate every stray.  SAVES is a volunteer led, not-for-profit organization.  SAVES offers free spaying/neutering for all feral cats and low cost spaying/neutering for all companion animals.  SAVES also has rescue cats available for adoption every day at the Riverhead Petco.  Visit Petco to fill out an adoption application that will be reviewed by the SAVES staff.  You can also visit the SAVES website to find out more about SAVES including the organizations Trap and Neuter efforts.

Last Chance Animal Rescue

Last Chance is a not-for-profit organization with a very direct mission – to save animals from high kill shelters and find those animals a happy home.  The Last Chance website offers a list of dogs and cats available for adoption.  These animals are all rescued from an extremely high kill shelter.  Last Chance brings the animals out of this shelter, spays/neuters and vaccinates them, then transports the pets to Long Island where they will find their forever home.  There is no Last Chance shelter as volunteers house all transported animals in foster homes.  However, Last Chance hosts events throughout the area where you can meet the animals and adopt.  The Last Chance website lists any upcoming events.
