Ged Rid Of Your Unwanted Drugs on Saturday

The take-back event will take place from 10:00 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Riverhead Police headquarters.

Start cleaning out your medicine cabinet — On Saturday, the Riverhead Police Department will be accepting all unwanted prescription drugs.

The take-back event, which is being offered in conjunction with the United States Department of Justice / Drug Enforcement Administration will take place at police headquarters, 210 Howell Avenue in Riverhead from 10:00 a.m. to 2 p.m.

“This is a great opportunity for those who missed the previous events, or who have subsequently accumulated unwanted, unused prescription drugs, to safely dispose of those medications,” Supervisor Sean M. Walter said. “All citizens are urged to check their medications and turn in expired or unwanted drugs. Doing so can help ensure the safety of you and your family.”

The police department, Chief David Hegermiller said, will accept all prescription drugs at no charge and with no questions asked.

"It is very important to legitimately get rid of these prescriptions because some can be very addictive and are gateway drugs to other more dangerous narcotics,” Chief Hegermiller said.

According to Hegermiller, Riverhead has participated in the National Prescription Drug Take-Back program since 2010 and each year, he said, the department collection rate increases.
