Kids, Families Raise Thousands for Michael Hubbard

Riverhead teenager was badly burned in an accident last May.

Almost one year after a devastating severely burned, neighbors from near and far continue to open their hearts.

Recently, the Three Village Central School District sponsored the Fifth Annual Contractors for Kids 5K Run/Walk at R.C. Murphy Junior High School, to benefit families of chronically ill children in need of support,  including the Hubbard family.

Approximately $37,000 was raised by over 1200 participants to benefit the Hubbard family and other families facing similar challenges.

The event was organized by Erin Connolly, a Three Village resident and guidance counselor at Murphy Junior High in Stony Brook.

"This is about kids, for kids, taking care of kids," said Connolly, adding that participants felt glad to support the Hubbard family.

Michael currently receives treatment at the Blythedale Children’s Hospital in Westchester County, where his mother, who left her job to care for her son, reportedly sleeps on a cot in his room.

Attending the recent run/walk were members of the Hubbard family, including a cousin, who cut the ceremonial ribbon at the start of the race.

Since the accident, the , a bill dubbed "Michael's Law."

According to the notice, "The Consumer Product Safety Commission has reason to believe that firepots and gel fuel used together may present an unreasonable risk of injury."

Fundraising efforts were also organized recently at the to benefit the Hubbard family and others.
