Last Chance: Long Island Fleece and Fiber Fair

The popular happening is a two-day event this year.

Feel like hanging out with some llamas, alpacas and sheep this weekend?

The Long Island Fleece and Fiber Fair unfolds at the  in Riverhead this weekend -- May 19 and 20 -- and, due to popular demand the past two years, the event is now a two-day affair.

Fun for the whole family, the event, co-sponsored by the Long Island Livestock Company, features demonstations of shearing, wool dying, spinning, weaving, sheep herding and other activities.

Llamas, alpacas, and angora rabbits will be on display; the Naugles Barn will be converted into a "Fiber Market" where vendors will sell hand spun yarn and other fiber-related goodies.

“There is a growing appreciation of the local fiber arts and this is a great event where the public can learn how fiber is produced and used in everything from yarn to bath goods," said Tabbethia Haubold, founder and owner of the Long Island Livestock Company.

Other fun events include a Llama Obstacle Course. 

“The success of the previous fairs shows the strong interest in fiber arts and the Museum Farm provides a wonderful and historic venue to showcase traditional crafts," said Herb Strobel, executive director of Hallockville.

The Peconic Ruggers and the Eastern Long Island Quilting Guild will also be onhand for rug hooking and quilt applique. For more information go to www.hallockville.com or call 631-298-5292.
