More Snow, Ice To Slam Region Tuesday Night

Only a day after being buried by up to eight inches of snow, the Long Island and New York City area is in for another round of the white stuff, topped with sleet, ice pellets, and freezing rain.

According to Ashely Sears, meteorologist for the National Weather Service office in Upton, precipitation is expected to begin Tuesday at around midnight and continue through Wednesday morning.

A winter storm warning/advisory is in effect from midnight Tuesday to 6 p.m. Wednesday.

Heavy snow and a wintery mix is expected to fall at a rate of about an inch an hour between 3 and 9 a.m.

Initially, Suffolk County will see moderate to light snow, which will transition to freezing rain Wednesday morning, just in time for the rush hour commute.

Eastern Long Island will see a rain/sleet mix through Wednesday afternoon, Sears said, with snow and rain tapering off by early evening.

Total snow accumulations for both Suffolk and Nassau Counties are expected to range between two and five inches, with less on the South Shore and heavier totals on the North Shore.

Ice totals are expected to fall between a trace and a tenth of an inch, Sears said.

"Roads will be treacherous," Sears said. "This will be accumulation on tree limbs and power lines, in addition to the snow that fell on Monday. This is another very wet snow system, that, combined with ice, will mean a lot of hazards out there. We're doing everything we can to have people see this as a snow day."

Weighted-down tree limbs are expected to spark power outages.

Temperatures are expected to range in the low 20s Tuesday night and warm up into the lower to mid 30s on Wednesday.

The New York City area, Sears said, will hold onto freezing precipitation later into the day, with the transition to rain and sleet not coming as early as out on Long Island.
