North Fork 'Idiot Spotter' Goes Missing on Facebook

What do you think of the page's sudden disappearance?

As quickly as it appeared, it seems to be gone.

Last week, Patch reported that a new Facebook page, "North Fork Idiot Spotter," documenting the social gaffes and public faux pas of the throngs — sometimes caught wearing only skimpy thongs — of visitors swarming the East End that garnered over 1000 "likes" overnight.

But just a few days later, the page appears to have been removed from Facebook, with no warning.

Attempts to contact the Mattituck creator of the page, who had asked to remain anonymous, have so far been unsuccessful.

North Fork Idiot Spotter, the most recent addition to the bevy of social media sites created to publicly shame or bash the misdeeds of summer visitors to the area's sandy beaches and bucolic farmlands hit Facebook on August 4 — with 1181 "likes" in 24 hours.

The creator of the page, who wished to remain anonymous, said they lived in Mattituck and were at Wendy's in Riverhead when the guy who was the site's profile picture was spotted.

"I wanted to start the page and have fun with my fellow North Forkers," the page creator said.

North Fork Idiot spotters was slated to feature not just poor drivers, but also, "anything funny that people see on the North Fork," with additional posts about fundraisers.

The goal was to make the page unique and not just copy the East Hampton pages.

The page followed days after a Facebook page created by Springs native James Cuomo, who rolledout D--che Spotter, which was embraced this season by the South Fork public.

That group, which started at the end of last summer, took an entire off-season to catch on. Then, Memorial Day 2013 hit, and local Facebook users, tired of bad drivers and the way hipsters dress, among other aggravations that come with summer in the Hamptons, took to the page in force to share their grievances — with photos so fellow readers could get a complete picture.

Next came a Facebook page that popped up soon after the publicity over Cuomo's story broke — "East Hampton Idiot Spotter."

North Fork Idiot Spotter featured photos of a scantily clad Tanger shopper, as well as some driving foibles.
