UPDATED: Freezing Rain Warning Updated to Ice Storm Status

Drive slow. Actually walk slow, too. Very, very slow. If at all.

The National Weather Service has updated its freezing rain warning to ice storm status - still in effect until 9 a.m. Wednesday morning - warning morning commuters across Long Island of extreme hazards on all paved surfaces and in some cases, urging commuters to stay home.

While ice accumulation on untreated, paved surfaces was previously expected to range from one-tenth to one-quarter of an inch, that has recently been increased to one-half to three-quarters of an inch. Or in other words, a "sheet of ice," according to the NWS.

"An ice storm means severe winter conditions are expected or occurring," the NWS states. "Significant amounts of ice accumulations will make travel dangerous or impossible. Travel is strongly discouraged. Commerce will likely be severely impacted."

The combination of freezing rain and sleet is expected to continue through early morning, as temperatures rise into mid to upper 30s by mid-morning.
