PHOTOS: Open House at Cornell A Gardener's Delight

Cornell gardeners hosted an open house with lectures and demonstrations.

Nearly 300 people turned out at the Cornell University Long Island Horticultural Research and Extension Center in Riverhead for an open house Saturday, which featured tours of the display garden and the new victory garden.

Various lectures and demonstrations took place throughout the day led by Cornell Gardeners. The making of leaf sculptures, growing dahlias, container gardening and flower design were among the demonstrations.

Visitors were asked to vote on the annual Trial Garden by placing a flag in the flowers they favored most.  The Trial Garden is a collection of various plants that have never been grown at the Cornell garden.

Cornell Gardeners had an ongoing plant and craft sale throughout the day. Wagon-ride tours of the research farm started at 11 a.m and 1 p.m. They were conducted by Dr. Mark Bridgen of Cornell University.
