Peconic Institute Seeks Laptop Computer Donations

Get rid of your old laptop and help those learning English. 

The Peconic Institute has organized a laptop recycling event to help reduce E-waste in the Peconic region and to encourage family literacy, and there's a drop off location at the Long Island Farm Bureau in Calverton. 

All donated laptops will be refurbished and donated to participants of an English As a Second Language "Digital Age Family Literacy Program," given in conjunction with the Epi Institute and the Linct program. The program is funded by Suffolk County, using US EPA and National Estuary Program funding. 

Suffolk BOCES will help to fix up the donated computers, according to Deborah Klughers, the director of sustainability at the Peconic Institute who is also an East Hampton Town Trustee. Laptops do not have to be in working order, she said. 

An IBM "Reading Companion" software program will be installed on the laptops before they are distributed to area students. 

The Long Island Farm Bureau at 104 Edwards Ave. in Calverton is accepting laptops on Sept. 30 only between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.

Donations can also be made at the Peconic Institute offices at the Stony Brook Southampton Library at 239 Montauk Highway in Southampton between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., or at LTV Studios at 75 Industrial Road in Wainscott during normal business hours.
