Record Number of Sea Turtles Released by Riverhead Foundation

8 turtles were returned to the sea on Tuesday.

On Tuesday afternoon, the Riverhead Foundation hit a record – the largest number of sea turtles released in one day.

The foundation reports that on Tuesday morning, they released four turtles at the Ponquouge Bridge in Hampton Bays and another four in the evening at the same location.

Three of the turtles are Kemp’s ridleys, who had been cold stunned late in 2012; and one is a Loggerhead, who had swallowed a fish hook and was rescued almost one year ago.

"We are thrilled to see the progress made in rehabilitating all eight of these sea turtles," said the foundation in a release to the media.

The turtles were all released with the help of the Cross Sound Ferry, the New England Aquarium.
