Riverhead Raceway Donates 100 Trees to Town

Trees are valued at $10,000.

gave Riverhead Town the gift of green recently.

Barbara and Jim Cromarty of Riverhead Raceway donated 100 trees to Riverhead, valued at $10,000.

Riverhead Town Supervisor Sean Walter was onhand earlier this month to accept the donation. The trees will be obtained from Verderber’s Landscape Nursery & Garden Center and will be planted throughout the town by the buildings and grounds department and the highway department.

Riverhead Raceway was one of only five tracks -- each of which participates in the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series --Green Clean Air Program, which plants trees for each green flag that drops during a NASCAR sanctioned race.

NASCAR donated the trees to Riverhead Raceway -- and the Cromartys decided to gift the trees to the town.

"I want to thank Barbara and Jim for their generosity in helping to beautify Riverhead and preserve our precious environment," Walter said. "It is gratifying to receive this eternal donation from a longtime Riverhead neighbor. These trees will be here for future generations to enjoy. Gifts just do not come any better than that.”

School Bus Demolition Derby

In other Riverhead Raceway news, a school bus demolition derby is on the agenda for Saturday night, aloso Cody's BBQ & Grill Night for the NASCAR Whelen All-American series. Amusement rides for children will also help kids celebrate the end of the school year. The school bus demolition derby will be held in memory of Flanders resident Donnie Fox, a former school bus demolition derby star who died after sustaining injurings in a car accident.
