Community Corner

School of the Arts Drum Circle Starts Off on the Right Beat

Community drum circle begins on the Peconic riverfront.

About 20 people gathered at the East End Arts Council School of the Arts Wednesday evening as the council began its summer community drum circle on the riverfront.

Steve Watson, Education Director for The School of the Arts, said it was a last-minute decision to hold the drum circle this summer. Watson said he is hoping the circle will grow over time as word spreads.

"We have a lot of things we want to do with this, we are going to build it up from a grassroots place." Watson said to those in the circle Wednesday night.

Drummers do not need any experience to participate in the circle; all levels of experience are welcome.

Instructor Jerome Liggon is a Westhampton Beach native who has been with The School of the Arts for seven years. He has been drumming nearly his entire life.

"Drumming is a family thing," Liggon explained. "It was a right of passage to participate in our family percussion jams."

The community drum circle will be held every Wednesday in July and August from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. behind the School of the Arts and adjacent to the Art Council's Carriage House. Participants should be 10 years old and up and do not need to have their own drum.
