Shelter: Black Pets Often Overlooked For Adoption

Adoption fees are half off for black pets in November at Kent.

It's "Back in Black" at the Kent Animal Shelter in Calverton, where the goal is to help find homes for black cats and dogs, who are often overlooked, according to experts.

So far, three black pets have been adopted, and the promotion is still going strong, to help adoptable black dogs, cats, puppies and kittens find homes in November.

The initiative is being held along with a nationwide effort by the animal welfare organization Best Friends Animal Society.

So far, two adult cats and one dog at Kent Animal Shelter have been adopted this month, according to staffers. BlackJack was brought to Kent as a kitten with a severe eye deformity, and Madonna was older, a two year old cat. Widget is a six-month-old puppy from the Turks and Caicos where she was a stray, but was adopted in Calverton.

As part of the promotion, adoption fees for black animals are 50 percent off during November. On Saturday, Nov. 16, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., black pets will be adopted to suitable homes for whatever donation is offered. To get a sneak preview of the pets, click here.

The goal of the Best Friends Animal Society is "No More Homeless Pets"; the group is hoping to stop the killing of dogs and cats in U.S. shelters.
