Tops Chefs Battle For the Beach in Riverhead

Student chefs will face off in Riverhead Friday using a dash of skills and a heaping spoonful of creativity.

Taking a page from a popular television series, top chefs will face off Friday in a heated competition in the kitchen to win a dream prize.

Students from the Suffolk County Community College Culinary School will get crafty in the kitchen, using cooking skills, speed and creativity to concoct a winner dish — without knowing any of the ingredients beforehand.

The event is modeled after popular "Chopped" reality series on The Food Network.

The cook off takes place Friday at 2 p.m. at the Suffolk County Community College Culinary Arts and Hospitality Center, in culinary arts lab room 127, located at 20 East Main Street in Riverhead.

The "Battle for the Beach" competition has a top prize the chefs will vie for: A trip to the Sheraton Clearwater Beach Resort in Clearwater, FL, including a seven night stay and round-trip airfare — as well as the chance to work under the executive chef at the resort.

“This competition takes students a step closer to becoming professional chefs.  It is a great opportunity to help them grow and to see if this is truly a career they want to pursue,” Richard Freilich, Director of Suffolk County Community College’s Culinary Arts Program, said.
