Winter “Blues” vs. Cold Weather Prosperity

How to keep your world bright when the sun hides its head.

Much has been written about SAD (Seasonal Affected Disorder).  Many people are under the impression that some of the debilitating emotional and physical effects associated with mid-winter life in the Northeast are pre-ordained and non-negotiable.  I maintain that, even if one is impacted by problems associated with short days (low sunlight levels) and brisk weather conditions, much can be done to mitigate the negative manifestation of SAD on a personal level.

The seasonal cycle of winter, with its commensurate reduction and retraction components, is vexing for some.  Mindset is everything, however, and with preparation and mild adjustments in one’s lifestyle, the opportunity for maximum balance can be achieved.  Warmth and “inner sunshine” can be cultivated during even the bleakest of seasons!  I think that, key to this way of approaching the “ebb” cycle of the four seasons, we must appreciate the opportunity for comprehensive rest and thorough recharging that is very possible at this time.

Recognizing that it is difficult to work at the same pace during the heart of the winter, as during the spring and summer months, is the first step in improving one’s lot.  Finding one’s smooth running cadence is paramount to truly enjoying the cold zone.  Let us say that choosing foods and activities that are best suited for this season, all things equal, is a cornerstone to living in step with nature.

The classic macrobiotic diet, for example, speaks of the importance of eating foods that are locally grown and in accord with the time of year in a given region, as integral to solving the question of right liveliness here at home.  Not burning the candle at both ends and playing a slightly conservative social life during the winter phase are wise practices now.  There are exceptions to every rule, but these are some basic tenants.  Take the necessary time to observe how our fellow creatures pace themselves and reflect on their place in harmony with their surroundings.

Every agriculturally based community worldwide recognizes the value in tuning in to the rate and timeliness of the world around us.  Always mindful of the consequences of running counter to the natural order, these distinct and learned cultures defer to their past kin on matters of core wellness and simple wisdom.

In past articles, there’s been discussion of various herbs and foods that help to bring in the sun’s radiance to our physical state, especially in the absence of Sol (our star/sun).  Employ these now, as they can save the day and render warmth in ways uncounted.
