Winter Storm Warning In Effect, Up to 10 Inches of Snow Monday

Long Island and New York will get another blast of winter weather Monday.

Despite Sunday's practically balmy temperatures, a blast of winter weather is expected to slam the entire Long Island and New York City area on Monday, with up to ten inches of snow expected in some areas.

According to Bill Goodman, meteorologist for the National Weather Service office at Upton, heavy snowfall is expected as cold air moves in from the north.

A winter storm warning is in effect from 5 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday for New York City and Long Island.

Overnight on Sunday, light rain or a snowy mix is expected between 2 and 4 a.m.

Heavy snow, with accumulation between five to eight inches, and up to ten inches in some areas, is expected, Goodman said.

Visibility of a quarter mile or less at times will make travel hazardous.

The light rain and snow mix is expected to change over to all snow around daybreak, with snow heavy at times, especially during the morning and early afternoon hours, hampering the morning commute and making travel difficult for many who are slated to leave the area after Sunday's Super Bowl, Goodman said.

Temperatures, which were in the lower 40s Sunday night, are expected to fall overnight and remain around or below freezing for most of Monday.

The snow is expected to move out of the area by Monday afternoon and be finished by nightfall, Goodman said.
