Would You Like to See Drag Racing at EPCAL?

One proposal being discussed would mean a private racing country club.

With an idea for a possible racing country club for Enterprise Park at Calverton suggested by Riverhead Town Supervisor Sean Walter this week, what do you think? Would you be interested in a private facility, similar to a golf club, at EPCAL?

Walter said plans for the future at EPCAL include a racing country club, where members would pay to join and race on a quarter mile track. "It would be no different than a golf club," Walter said. "That's what we're studying."

But, the supervisor added, although  and  are two uses that have residents divided passionately on both sides, with some fervently advocating for a new drag strip and environmentalists decrying the possibility, the bottom line is that before any future use can be discussed, the subdivision process and environmental review by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation must be completed first.

What do you think? Take the poll and share your thoughts in the comments section.

I am a NY CITY Detective and have seen tooo many accicents of kids speeding on highways and getting killed....this I think would end most of that....They can go to a local drag strip and settle who is faster...

FRANKIE RUIZ August 07, 2012 at 03:55 PM
I'm from the BRONX & I approve for a DRAG RACING TRACK IN L.I. !!! That way there's a place to have fun besides E-TOWN & it will help bring money to L.I.

And there is a program in place right now that affords the PD to combat street racing issues, that is called the beat the heat program, but without a track here there can be no such program, instead just more stricter laws which makes for more deadly accidents. The police do not want to be investigating this stuff nor see kids dead because of a FEW selfish people and a single town supervisor not willing to even TRY anything to save lives . . . . .

Every Motorsport enthusiast wants a track on long island. I feel that we've been stripped of what we as drag racers love to do. None of us like paying 100s of dollars to go to new jersey to race our cars. It's time to bring drag racing back to long island.

I own a Commercial Roof Company "1800FLATROOF" in Calverton In EPCAL. I am about to start a huge roof project in Riverhead . This project will bring jobs to the local area, and will benefit the farmers as well. However the profits for this project will go out of State because I cannot enjoy a simple way of life here on your dead end island.Im talking about a race track..No race track No Money ...See you in the Sunshine State .(((stupid people)))

Longisland Needsadragstrip August 28, 2012 at 12:55 PM
look at all the surrounding areas near or close to a motorsport venue ,, atco e-town .charlotte nc , daytona taldega , etc,,,, the privates business , food stores, resaraunts hotels are doing well ,, why people come to vist & spend $$$$ . i have lived on li all my life ,, we need a attraction !!.. at the same time wil get rid of street racing .. ... lets get some one at R.H.T WHO DOESNT HAVE A HEARING PROBLEM & understands Safety, Prosperity, motorsports @ calverton the pavement is allready there !. we dont have to cut down any trees :)
larryd August 28, 2012 at 03:56 PM
Id love to have a place to play here on li. Im tired of donating money to NJs taxes.
John August 28, 2012 at 04:04 PM
PEOPLE THIS IS TALKING ABOUT MAKING A PRIVATE CLUB they are proposing a track basically for the rich people. The track should be for all, the rich have enough clubs they could go and play with their snooty friends in. A private club won't bring money to LI either. Open a track to all and the local businesses will benefit from it also.
larry sumner August 28, 2012 at 05:31 PM
We need a public track. This country club thing seems like a way for the riverhead town board squash it before it even starts. Most drag racers are willing to spend a few hundred a weekend but we're not gonna pay thousands for an elite membership to a private dragstrip. Obviously like most government officials stupidity rules. We're sorry the indoor ski thing didn't work out but hey who would have seen that failure lol.You want to make money? Make the track public like everywhere else in the country. As for traffic it was never a problem at Long Island Motorsport park.
edward August 28, 2012 at 06:21 PM
Yes yes and yes! This a no brainer the county needs money and this a great way to bring it in. If traffic is a serious concern to some, then maybe long island is not the place for them to live. Let's keep hot rodding alive. If you build it they will come.
Chris August 28, 2012 at 08:31 PM

The town complains about the effects a drag strip would have on the enviroment ...look at this place now!!!!.The world largest junk yard.Thousands of Toxic cars dripping a black goo all over the enviroment..Whats wrong with this picture?
A.N.Other January 27, 2013 at 01:27 AM
Bob, you're right all those cars plus the constant flow of trucks in and out on rt 25. I don't even like drag racing but I am for the proposel
Ernie Jensen February 27, 2013 at 03:25 PM
There is a need for all the reasons mentioned in the other positive posts. It is a shame that the local government can not put something together that could work for the public, or remove all the red tape and burocracy that makes it impossible for private investment to do.
