Photos: Jam Session Brings Winterfest Back to Hotel Indigo

Artists rotate in and out throughout night in improv sessions.

While the vineyards have played host to Long Island Winterfest's Jazz on the Vine performances on Saturdays and Sundays, once the sun goes down on the vines, jazz has been heating up at each weekend.

At its Bistro 72 lounge bar, the hotel has been hosting improv sessions each Saturday night, and will continue to do so on the final two weekends of the six-week jazz festival.

Hosting the sessions each week, from 7-10 p.m., is the Steve Watson Trio, led by Educational Director Steve Watson on bass. Jane Hastay joins him on piano, while James Benard plays drums.

Saturday's session included, as always, a whirlwind of artists who have performed throughout the Jazz on the Vine festival. From bassists to vocalists to saxophonists, to complete trios taking the stage for a few songs at a time, the improv session at the Indigo provided the audience an opportunity to see the musicians in a separate atmosphere other than a typical set devoted specifically to him, her, or them. Individuals and groups collaborated as they never before have, and never will again.
