Top 10 Art Stories From the Past 3 Months

Riverhead has a very rich creative community with many opportunities and events occuring throughout the year. We dug up the best art stories of 2010 and decided to share them with you again.

The East End Arts Council premiered "Scenes From a Book" on Sept. 10, which is a show of photographs inspired from literary classics. Some of the works featured were 'Alice's Adventures in Wonderland' and Cormac McCarthy's 'The Road.' The photograph interpretations were all creative and different. The works stayed on display until Oct. 8.

Christian Nilsson is a recent college graduate who knows the difficulty of trying to make it in the film business, which is why he held a screening of his short films to help raise money for a career opportunity in California. A job opportunity with a commercial producer in California is available to him but he has to raise the funds to get there.

Jeffrey Allen Price was made Artist-in-Residence by the East End Arts Council and gave him one of Main Street's empty storefronts for a "potato art" exhibit. Price declares himself a "Potato Artist" and used the space to paper the wall with potato sacks and feature games such as Dondi Potata Race.

Four artists displayed their surreal work in the exhibition "Other Worlds" at Art Sites in Riverhead. Many intriguing works of art were on display, such as Micheline Gingras creation inspired by the economic crash or Sylvia Newman's creations which are made from objects she finds and simply adds to them. The exhibit ran through Dec. 19.

People from all over the Riverhead school district had the opportunity to come together for the production of 'Annie.' Thirty children and 30 adult actors partook in the performance. Ella Watts-Gorman, an 11-year-old from Lady Mercy of Catholic School in Cutchogue played the role of Annie. In addition many students and adult volunteers worked on the sets, costumes, lighting and music.

The third annual Suffolk County Historical Society's juried photography theme was "Main Street, Suffolk County." Thirty-five photos were chosen to be a part of the exhibit, which depicted Main Street, past and present. The first place photo depicted the post office in Stony Brook in December, wrapped in holiday ivy.


Peconic Public Broadcasting completed its purchase of 88.3 PM in mid-December after about a year and a half of efforts to purchase the broadcasting rights to the station.

The East End Arts Council organized the 2010 Holiday Window Decorating Contest for the community. Twenty-two displays were featured in downtown Riverhead and the favorite display was awarded a $500 prize at the Riverhead Town Bonfire.

Tom Gahan hosted his book launch party at Digger O'Dell's.Gahan helped found the Riverhead Blues Festival and always had a dream of writing a book. "Harmony Bay" is his first novel which touches on history, small communities and the fragile nature of waterways.

Adam Straus, a riverhead artist, had an exhibit, "Air and Water: Or Everything is Alright Until it Isn't," on view at the Nohra Haime Gallery in Manhattan. His paintings portrayed the beauty of the East End and Strau's concern for the earth.
