Take the Summer Reading Challenge

Summer Reading Challenge

Summer’s arriving.  What a perfect time to read and learn about the world right here in New York.  Studies show that children who continue to read during the summer perform better in school in the fall.

To encourage our children to become excited about reading, I am holding the Summer Reading Challenge, in coordination with the New York State Libraries initiative, Summer Reading at New York Libraries.  “Explore New York” is the New York Libraries theme, saying to children “Dream Big, READ” and urging tweens to “Own the Night” and see what the world offers.

Here’s how the challenge works: You can pick up a Summer Reading Challenge brochure and calendar at your local library or at my district office at 400 West Main Street, Suite 201, in Riverhead.  Your child can mark on the calendar each day in July and August that they read with you, with someone else, or alone.  When they’ve marked off 40 days or more, your child has earned a New York State Assembly Excellence in Reading certificate.  You just have to fill out the brochure and send it to my district office in Riverhead and I’ll be sure that your child receives a certificate.
