With several farmers' market organizations now wanting to set up shop in at places like wineries and preserved land, Leslie Weisman, head of the town’s Zoning Board of Appeals, told the Southold Town Board at a Feb. 28 work session that she did not feel comfortable signing off for approval under a town code that does not currently address what she described as “creative marketing strategies” that various business people are trying to put in place on the North Fork.

“What I’m seeing now are retail-type endeavors on agricultural property, and I’m concerned about the frequency of these events," she said. “It’s very important for the board to be aware that the winery owners are trying to do the right thing by coming to us, but this is all new ground. The North Fork is growing with marketing ideas and we need to figure out how this development should occur.”

SOUTHAMPTON

A controversial supermarket development project proposed in Tuckahoe is coming back before the Southampton Town Board in a scaled-down version.

Southampton Venture and developer Robert Morrow’s earlier proposal for a mixed-use shopping center on 12.4 acres with apartments, dubbed Tuckahoe Main Street, proved too big for the community and Town Board’s taste, as the board . Now Morrow is back with an alternative proposal, Tuckahoe Center, that is still anchored with a supermarket but will be on 7.3 acres with just two additional buildings and no apartments.

RIVERHEAD

Christmas Tree Shops has expressed interest in filling one of a handful of new retail spaces drawn up for Route 58, next to Riverhead Raceway, according to the project's developer.

Though the plans still have to make their way through the site plan process, Martin Berger of Saber Real Estate Advisors said late last week he hopes to break ground on the project by the end of this year.

WESTHAMPTON-HAMPTON BAYS

Fisherman's Quarters, formerly known for it's late night crowd, has a new owner — Ray Sweeney, who also owns 4 N Main Gallery in Southampton Village, purchased the bar, renovated it and gave it a new name.

Now called , Sweeney hopes to reinvigorate the roadside bar, transforming it into a local watering hole, featuring music, tap beer and eventually local art.

EAST HAMPTON

Chef-owner Matthew Guiffrida's much anticipated Muse in the Harbor opened Thursday on Sag Harbor's Main Street, bringing with it the New American cuisine that made its predecessor, , a hit in Water Mill.
