In Season: Blackberries, Cucumbers, Tomatoes and More

Farm stands across the North Fork had a variety of different crops come in this week.

There was no clear consensus pick among local farm stands this week, as each one featured a different fruit or vegetable fresh from the fields.

Garden of Eve on Sound Avenue was selling fresh blackberries, according to farm owner Eve Kaplan. Kaplan said her farm stand was also selling canning supplies, and had just held a class on how to make blackberry jam.

Northville Farms in Riverhead didn't have any blackberries in their stock, but owner Gwen Gajeski said tomatoes and cucumbers were coming in well from the harvest.

"Cucumbers have just exploded," she said. Northville Farms also had a fresh patch of pickles for sale.

White eggplants and red russian kale were featured at Schmitt's Farmstand on the corner of Roanoke and Sound Avenues.

Reeve Farm, meanwhile, didn't have either of those produce items, but a farmer there said the cabbage had just been picked that week. While all the produce at his store was freshly picked, the man added that the next batch of different crops wouldn't come until around Labor day.
