In Season: Peaches and Cherry Tomatoes Arrive at Local Farm Stands

Radishes and beets are also popular choices.

Peaches and tomatoes are in season at local farm stands across Riverhead this week, along with popular favorites like radishes and string beans.

Deb Schmitt, of Schmitts Farmstand on the corner of Roanoke and Sound avenues, said that while their large tomatoes are still being picked from the hothouse, cherry tomatoes and smaller-sized tomatoes called "fourth of julys" were both picked at the farm.

"Oh and the peaches," Schmitt said, "How could I forget about the peaches?" The peaches had been just picked fresh, according to Schmitt.

Reeve Farm's stand on Sound Avenue also had displays advertising their fresh peaches, and Briermere Farm down the road on Sound Avenue had both local peaches and cherry tomatoes grown in a greenhouse at their farmstand.

A farmer at the Mill Road farm stand said that local radishes have been a popular option the past few weeks. Golden and red beets were also hot commodities, along with summer squash and onions.

All four farm stands still offered fresh zucchini, spinach, blueberries and herbs. In the coming weeks farmers will begin to pick full-sized tomatoes from their fields instead of the greenhouses, but until then cherry tomatoes remain a delicious option.

Stay tuned next week for another installment of In Season.
