In Season: Strawberries Are Here

Farmers say strawberries have started coming up within the past five days.

Strawberries have arrived.

For most, the tasty fruit that has earned its own local festival came in over the past five days or so, delayed this year by about a week and a half due to a cooler spring – or not much spring at all, depending on how one looks at it.

Reeve Farm on Sound Avenue had strawberries for the first time on Tuesday, and Billy Berezney at Mill Road Farm said he got his in over the weekend.

Paul Reeve at Bayview Farms on Main Road in Jamesport said he got his in about five days ago, and while some local farmers had noted they've had strawberries in as long as two weeks, Reeve said that's due to covering them up to hasten the growth process.

The Mattituck Lions Club is hosting its 59th annual Strawberry Festival June 13 through June 16. So fill up soon before they all go there.
