The Lobster Roll Northside's New Incarnation Unveiled

The new North Fork Tasting Room will feature food samplings and wine and beer tastings.

One of Riverhead's most beloved eateries is getting a makeover.

, located at Baiting Hollow Commons on Sound Avenue in Riverhead, will debut its new look and vision at a grand opening on August 3.

The new venture, by veteran restauranteur Frederick H. Terry Sr., who decided to come back out of semi-retirement, is a new concept tasting room for both foods and beverages.

Terry founded the popular Hamptons eatery, The Lobster Roll, a.k.a. Lunch, in Amagansett over 40 years ago and remains a principal in the business.

Plans for the newly shaped Riverhead business include utilizing The Lobster Roll Northside's existing kitchens to produce a retail line including packaged lobster and seafood salads, baked breads, cookies, artisanal cheese boards, packaged seasonings, sauces, coffees, oils and local wine vinegars.

Also featured will be a small tasting room offering local wines and craft beers. "We’ve been doing wine flights and beer on the deck for those customers waiting to enter the restaurant,” Terry said. Adding that up until now, the concept was weather dependent, Terry said, "It’s only natural to replace the existing empty shop space with food samplings as well as wine and beer tastings.”

The North Fork Tasting Room will serve satisfy customers' cravings for The Lobster Roll Northside's signature lobster rolls and lighter fare year-round; the Lobster Roll Northside traditionally closed during winter months.

“This is what I envisioned for the complex since its inception 12 years ago,” said Terry. “The timing is now perfect and suits my personal culinary agenda to feature some very old family recipes.”

Some mouth-watering items offered will include wild rhubarb sauce, scallion and herbed butters, collard cakes, sweet potato pie, turnip chips, sassafras smoked fish, and huckleberry pie.

The focus in the new foodie establishment will be on all things local, including Long Island wines, local craft beers and tastings of small plate dishes created from local ingredients.

Wines will be offered as tasting flights and also by the glass; local wines will be served with the goal of helping to promote area wineries. To that end, maps, guides, and promotional materials from local wineries will be offered to guests. In addition, vineyard representatives from local wineries will pour unique vintages and varietals on weekends.

Micro-brews will be offered either on tap or in the bottle and will include choices of craft beers from breweries including Long Ireland in Riverhead and Six Pointe Brewery in Brooklyn.

Events at the North Fork Tasting Room will include live music, educational wine and beer events, and theme nights to capture the "feel" of the East End community.

The new venture breathes new life and exciting new vision into the popular eatery after that the  would be auctioned off with the retail space behind the restaurant known as Baiting Hollow Commons.

Although the concept sounds interesting,where are all the cars going to park?
If you want to observe abuse,look across the street at "Prime" Movers--approved in the dead of night years ago,and violating zoning rules ever since WHERE IS THE CODE ENFORCEMENT???

You forgot..."Get Off My Lawn!" It's a seasonal business on an Island that is losing businesses in droves. I say, good luck with the new format; traffic is bad in the Summer/Fall anyway and cars parking for a Lobster Roll can be tolerated. .

I wish Fred and his family great success on what is a wonderful idea! Good Luck, Joe!

Hi,Fred;
I'm not unhappy--just concerned about parking. Don't you agree that the Moving Company across the street from you, "Prime" is an eyesore that violates Codes on a daily basis? Don't you think that parking capacity is a consideration for your business? BTW--your business is maintained well,and has no parking issues most of the time

Is everything up and running, Fred? I'd love to come visit...Sounds AWESOME!

We employ 17 kids - 5 from Reeves Park, 4 from Zdunko Lane, and 8 from within 1/2 mile on Sound Avenue. They walk. In 1999, the property was in disrepair and a major national convenience store chain was eyeing the property. Since I represent the oldest family in Baiting Hollow whose original farm included all of Reeves Park, (the original farmhouse was on the corner), 4-H, and numerous other local properties, I thought it appropriate to try a "soft" use of little shops and a family restaurant. We've tried to continue our "soft" use and added substantial additional parking this year after 2 years of hearings and public debate. Our new "tasting room" should be a fun thing that primarily serves our existing customers during long wait times and in the winter. Our public bathrooms, easily our most popular feature and the source of our longest lines, are the only available for 25 mile East West distance, and people do frequently park to use these facilities. Actually, to take a little pressure off us, if you live within a mile or two radius and would like to provide relief for some of these weary travelers, please post your address and I will make certain that this information is conveyed to the appropriate distressed parties. Meanwhile, we'll keep plodding ahead as we have for the last 372 years and try to be good neighbors and continue as the area's largest taxpayer and employer. Frederick H. Terry Sr.

Well said,Fred;
My Family's been in Reeves Park for 60 years--I feel like a newcomer compared to your Family's seniority--LOL I commend you on employing the Local kids--they do a great job for you,and I enjoy seeing them when I eat there. Reeves Park is a special place.as you know. Our Families have witnessed changes to our Rural character over the years,and I know you agree that WE must protect what's left of our Historic Sound Avenue Corridor. My original Post was really critical of the Business across the street,not yours--I only asked a question about parking. I must say,I haven't seen any parking problems for your business,and didn't know about your extra parking,so it seems my concern about parking is remedied. I wish you well in your expansion, Mr. Terry,and know it will be done in a manner that enhances our Historic Corridor. P.S.--any chance of you buying out the Moving Company?? I know you'd fix the eyesore if you could!
