Local Wine, With a Long Island Expressway Twist

Shoppers near and far are buying Palmer Vineyards' 495 label.

What's worse than driving the Long Island Expressway during rush hour?

Perhaps drinking wine labeled in honor of the hated highway.

But before jumping to conclusions, Patch checked in with one store manager in Deer Park, Crazy Billy's manager Genepat Byrd, who said the wine, made by Palmer Vineyards,  located on Sound Avenue in Riverhead, is pretty good.

"People buy it, especially when it's a gift for someone who isn't from Long Island," Byrd said, adding it's also a fun gift for someone who either has a Long Island connection or moved away from the region.

As for the wine, he said "it's not bad."

Byrd did add that the label design can be a drawback for some.

The store on Deer Park Avenue carries the Chardonnay and Merlot for $9.99.
