Long Ireland Brews With Blind Bat for Saison Bottle Release

"Collabration Saison Ale" being released on Monday in four separate locations across Long Island.

Just in time for Long Island Craft Beer Week,  is putting out its third bottle release on Friday, a collaborative effort with Centerport-based Blind Bat Brewery.

Dubbed Collaboration Saison Ale, the French farmhouse-style beer, brewed with a standard coriander flavor, offers drinkers a balance of yeasty and fruity esters while packing 6.6 percent alcohol by volume, a slightly heavier ABV for a typical saison.

After , the 2,500-batch of saisons came about naturally after Long Ireland owners Greg Martin and Dan Burke found themselves previously collaborating with Blind Bat owner Paul Dlugokencky in ways that didn't involve brewing.

Blind Bat is currently run as Dlugokencky's second job. As a full-time graphic designer, he obtained permits to license a brewery out of a garage at his Centerport home, and while expansion plans are in the works, limited space has resulted in a barter system between Long Ireland and Blind Bat.

"Because he has limited space, he'll get deliveries to our place sometimes," Martin said. "We let him wash his kegs here. He's asked us how much and we said don't worry about it. Because he's a graphic designer he's been doing our label design - he just did our Double IPA. So it's worked out. And this just seemed like a good fit."

Martin said the two breweries sat down with their own saison recipes recently and combined the two to put together a "master recipe" yielding a 600-gallon batch containing saaz, sterling, and hallertau hops. The 750-ml bottles will be corked and caged, as were Long Ireland's Black Friday Imperial Stouts.

On Monday, the kickoff night for LICBW, the Collaboration Saison will be tapped with a "simulcask," as four separate casks will be tapped at four different bars across Long Island (, The Cortland, , and ). Each tapping will be taped and put online for viewing, and the bottles will subsequently be available for retail purchase.

Correction: An earlier version of this article stated that the simulcask was on Friday. It was on Monday.
