New Center for Diabetes To Open Soon

Andrew Mitchell of PBMC Health made major announcement regarding diabetic health care on Wednesday.

PBMC Heath has just made a major commitment to individuals living with diabetes on the East End.

Despite the fact that he admitted he hadn't yet completely "vetted" the announcement with all  members of the staff, Andrew Mitchell, FACHE, President and CEO of PMBC Health and Peconic Bay Medical Center announced on Wednesday that he was "going to make a commitment," regarding a new center for diabetes at the new PBMC campus in Manorville.

"Diabetes is a major factor in the health and welfare of adults and, increasingly, in the childhood population," Mitchell said. A large population of young people currently diagnosed with juvenile diabetes must travel to Stony Brook University Medical Center.

The concept of bringing a Harvard University-Joslin Diabetes Center to Manorville has been discussed with the East End Health Alliance, Mitchell said.

Among patients and medical professionals, the Joslin Diabetes Center, located in Boston, has long been considered the world's preeminent diabetes research, clinical care and education organization, Mitchell said. No matter what EEHA decides, Mitchell committed to bringing the program to the new ambulatory campus in Manorville.

The world renowned program, he added, will be the first in New York State, and the only one in Suffolk County. The new program will not only care for diabetic patients but will provide a certified and standardized education program that can be brought to schools and communities with an eye toward reducing obesity and diabetes onset.

While the is a th, Mitchell promised that whether in conjunction with EEHA or on its own, PBMC Health would have a Joslin diabetes franchise set up within the next six months, as part of the 2013 budget. Since the Manorville campus is still being planned, the diabetes program may begin at PBMC and relocate later.

"We need to start this program in 2013," he said.
