New Farmers' Market Features Free Kids' Club

Kids will paint with fruits and vegetables at the next session on Feb. 15.

Not only did crowds pour into downtown Riverhead Saturday for the kick-off of the brand-new indoor Farmers' Market on Main Street, but they had a place to leave the kids while they perused the delicious array of breads, baked goods, cheese, seafood, jams and other delectable offerings.

Riverhead Macaroni Kid has set up a Kids' Club at the new indoor market, said publisher Dawn Betke; the kids' club will meet every other week.

"As a mom of a teenager and a preschooler, I'm excited to bring the family aspect to the new Riverhead Indoor Farmers' Market. We would like to welcome children to the market and encourage parents to bring them," Betke said.

"My hope is the Kids' Club will not only be fun, but the kids will learn something, too," she added. "I would like to make learning about fresh, healthy foods fun and entertaining for the kids. We will be incorporating stories, crafts, and hands-on activities into our schedule of events.:

The Kids' Club will be available every other Saturday through May 10. The next session will be held on Feb. 15, and kids will be able to paint with fruits and vegetables, creating flower stamps.
