On A Shoestring: Making Ends Meet in Riverhead

A new series will look at how residents stretch paychecks in challenging economic times.

Times are hard.

And, for Riverhead residents, the struggle to make ends meet is a daily battle.

According to the United States Census Bureau, Riverhead has a median family income of $52,211 - a number that equals 62 percent of the Suffolk County median household income -- with 12 percent of residents living below the poverty level, more than twice the poverty level in Suffolk County overall.

But despite the bleak economic forecast, Riverhead residents continue to live and work and raise families -- finding ways to savor life despite the rough spots.

With paychecks stretched thin, some residents could find themselves priced out of popular local attractions, unable to afford admission fees. That's why some local businesses, such as the , offer specials for locals; every Friday in November the aquarium is free for Riverhead Township residents as "our way of giving thanks," said Johanna Zucaro, director of communications.

In addition, the facility offers special rates for any groups of 15 or more, including schools and camps.
