Small Business Saturday: Chamber Encourages Consumers to Shop Local

Where will you shop on Small Business Saturday?

Small Business Saturday unfolds for shoppers across the East End on Saturday, with the focus on buying local.

“Small Business Saturday” is an initiative launched by American Express in 2010 in order to celebrate and encourage small business spending, with special deals located at small businesses around town, according to Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone's office.

The Riverhead Chamber of Commerce recently sent a shout out encouraging shoppers to support the town's local businesses.

In addition, the Chamber sent out a flyer listing all of Riverhead's small businesses, and said shoppers should frequent them not just on small business Saturday, but every day.

In addition, Lori Ledek of Lori's Originals in Calverton told Patch coupons are being given out for 20 percent off a customer's entire purchase on Small Business Saturday. "Last year was a huge success," she said.

Lori's Originals is located at 4364 Middle Country Road in Calverton, next door to J&R's Steakhouse.

According to the U.S. Labor Department and the Small Business Administration, small businesses accounted for 65 percent of all new net jobs in the past 17 years and small businesses employ 65 million Americans, Bellone said. A research firm employed by American Express found that $5.5 billion was spent on “Small Business Saturday” in 2012. The U.S. Senate officially recognized “Small Business Saturday” in 2011.
