Days after two more Dumpster fires were reported in Riverhead, a "suspicious" Dumpster fire was reported to Quogue Village police on Thursday — the fire brings the total of recent dumpster fires across the area to 13.
According to Quogue police, the owner of a business at 58 Old Country Road reported that sometime between Saturday, Jan. 26 and Jan. 29, someone set their Dumpster on fire.
Police said the fire was undetected by police and fire officials, who were not notified until after the incident and the Dumpster has already been removed by the owner and replaced with a new one.
The fire, which caused $400 in damage to the Dumpster, is now under investigation by Quogue police, as well as by the Southampton Fire Marshal's office, which is iinvestigating a series of other recent Dumpster fires along with the Riverhead Fire Marshal's office, which responded to two more dumpster fires on Tuesday.
The other 10 fires were reported between Jan. 26 and Jan. 29 with the Westhampton Beach Fire Department responding to two fires; the Hampton Bays Fire Department responding to three; and the Riverhead Fire Department responding to 5.
