Antique of the Week: Patriotic Dry Sink

Tantalizing Treasures Gift Gallery in Jamesport is selling this Americana antique, right on time for the Independence Day celebrations.

Dry sinks were everyday household items during the 19th century. They were kept in bathrooms, back porches, bedrooms, anywhere where someone might need to wash up.

The top part of the dry sink usually contains one flat area where the water pitcher and wash basin was held. The other half of the top area was recessed to allow water to flow freely, away from the pitcher and basin.

The bottom half of the dry sink was used as storage for towels and other wash items.

In the case of this particular dry sink, the top was very likely added later, particularly the eagle carving, as most 19th century dry sinks had no need for a top. However, the eagle appears to be hand carved and adds great flare to the piece.

Today, antique dry sinks are often used for decorations, piled high with kitchen utensils or towels, used as cupboards to store goods, or even used as pantrys.
