School District Will Continue 'Evaluation' of Student's Death

The East Hampton School Board kept its meeting brief on Tuesday evening so that members of the board and administrative staff could attend a wake for high school junior David Hernandez Barros, who died unexpectedly on Saturday. 

District Superintendent Rich Burns read a statement on behalf of the board after a moment of silence was observed for the 15-year-old student. 

"This has been a tragedy. We are grieving for David, his family and our community. We will continue our thorough evaluation of this sad and complex situation. Our thoughts and prayers go to the family," Burns said. 

SOUTHAMPTON

New Hospital Planned on Stony Brook Southampton Campus

Southampton Hospital will soon enter into a philanthropic campaign to build a new 125-bed facility at Stony Brook University's Southampton campus under a tentative agreement that will put the hospital under Stony Brook University Medical Center's state operating license.

The new facility will replace the hospital's current and original home in Southampton Village on Meeting House Lane, which opened in 1909. The two hospitals have had an affiliation since 2008, but the proposed agreement puts Southampton Hospital in the Stony Brook Medicine healthcare system.

Hospital officials and East End politicians lauded the move Monday morning at Southampton Hospital's Parrish Hall, explaining how the affiliation between the heath care facilities will provide better, more efficient care for South Fork residents.

NORTH FORK

Though litigation with the Town of Southold is ongoing, the managers of Vineyard 48 in Cutchogue are offering everything from dance parties and catering to beer and sangria at their Route 48 tasting facility — and they will continue to do so throughout the fall.

In late May, the town issued a temporary restraining order against Vineyard 48, the managers of which organized andpromoted outdoor dance parties that often exceed the building’s permitted capacity and generated complaints about noise and lewd behavior from neighbors. So the manager moved the DJ indoors and continued the dance parties throughout the summer, and complaints have been a lot less frequent, Southold Town Councilman Al Krupski told North Fork Patch this past July.

Manager Matt McBride told Patch this week that the vineyard has been working to “make sure everyone is happy." “It seems to be working out with the town,” he said. "We actually no longer promote the dance party, just that we have music. And we monitor the occupancy all the time as also."

RIVERHEAD

Hearts are broken in Riverhead as family and friends remember John Scorzelli, Jr., 46, who died in a tragic car accident on Sound Avenue Friday night.

Her husband, Scorzelli's wife, Maria, said, was a dedicated physician's assistant who worked at Brookhaven Hospital and Winthrop-University Hospital. 

Remembering her husband's life, Scorzelli's voice was filled with emotion. "He loved the beach." That's why, she said, her family moved from Levittown to live in the Reeves Beach community in Riverhead and raise their two young sons, Odin, 9, and Honor, who will turn 8 next week.

The couple, who were married 14 years, celebrated their anniversary and Maria's birthday on Sept. 11.
