Enlarging Cupsogue Beach Breach To Be Filled In

Work to fill in three barrier island breaches caused by Hurricane Sandy at Cupsogue, Smith Point and Fire Island is expected to start in the coming weeks, according to environmental consultant Aram Terchunian, of First Coastal Corporation.

The breaches, which widened after last Wednesday's nor'easter, will all be repaired under a Federal breach contingency plan, which was developed in the early 1990s after Hurricane Bob and several nor'easters ripped through the area, causing breaches at the Moriches Inlet and at Pikes Beach.

NORTH FORK

Ronan Guyer, a Southold freshman, died Wednesday evening after suffering cardiac arrest and collapsing this past Friday during a warm-up before the New York State Public High School Athletic Association cross country championships in Elma.

Guyer survived five days in a medically induced coma at the Womens and Children’s Hospital of Buffalo after being revived from cardiac arrest. The active student-athlete had been familiarizing himself with the cross country course before the race when he slipped on a patch of mud, hitting the ground very hard with his chest, Lisa Plaia said, adding that the teen did not have any history of heart problems.

UPDATE: Cops Investigate Gunshot Wound

Southampton Hospital emergency room staff reported a woman was admitted for treatment of a gunshot wound to town police on Oct. 30 at about 2:15 p.m.

Detectives interviewed the 42-year-old East Hampton woman at the hospital and she told them she was cleaning a house that she was moving into on Northwest Landing Road in East Hampton. "While moving some furniture, she sustained a gunshot wound," she told police.

Town Police Detective Lt. Chris Anderson said that the true story eventually came: She was accidently shot by her husband, who picked up a gun he found in the house as they were moving in and it accidently discharged.

Meadow Lane Boathouse May Rise Again

A rustic building on Meadow Lane, which many locals took to calling the Old Boathouse, was flattened by Superstorm Sandy, but now Southampton Village Mayor Mark Epley says the owners plan to have the landmark put back together.

Epley said that the footings that supported the boathouse are still in place, though the roof caved in. While the building was not used for years, owners Joseph and Diana DiMenna want to restore it to an active use, the mayor said.

The Old Boathouse was located on Shinnecock Bay across from 1280 Meadow Lane, and has been photographed countless times over the years. It was featured in the background in "Refuge," an independent film shot in Southampton in February 2011, that premiered at the Hamptons International Film Festival.

RIVERHEAD

Brad Bender, president of the Flanders, Riverside and Northampton Civic Association, has had enough.

Enough of escalating crime, including prostitutes and drug dealers who engage in illegal activity on the streets of Riverside and Flanders in broad daylight -- and enough of insufficient police protection.

The community, Bender said, clearly only has one sector car -- down from two -- patrolling an area where population is higher than ever and crime is on the rise.

And he said it's the responsibility of the Southampton Town board to take action and protect residents.
