Good News: Kids Step up to Help Others

Also this week, a six-pound turtle was rescued in Springs.

In the wake of Hurricane Sandy, The Long Island Junior Soccer League cancelled the remainder of their 2012 fall season. Upon hearing of the devastation in neighboring towns, Joanne Beers and her daughter, Grace, of Miller Place, wanted to do something to help out one team directly.

The girls from the Mt. Sinai U12 Fillies got together and made 20 no-sew fleece blankets for their league-mates in Lindenhurst, and both teams met Nov. 18 at Lindenhurst Middle School for a friendly scrimmage and to deliver the blankets.

On Monday night, the village of Port Jefferson honored fourth grader Paige Miller for her 911 call that helped save her grandmother's life. Miller - who had previously been honored by the school district - called police after witnessing her grandmother have a stroke.

According to a village statement, the youngster also stayed on the phone with emergency workers as they drove to her house all the while comforting her grandmother.

Sea Turtle Rescued off Louse Point

A cold-tunned sea turtle was rescued off Louse Point Beach in Springs on Tuesday afternoon.

The Riverhead Foundation for Marine Research and Preservation is treating the Atlantic green sea turtle, the second one the rescue foundation has taken in this season.

Residents walking the beach saw the small 6-pound turtle, less than 1 foot long, within the incoming tidal waters, and called the foundation's hotline at about 5 p.m, according to Kimberly Durham, the Rescue Program Director.
