Temple Israel of Riverhead will host a Holocaust Memorial Day Observance aimed at raising awareness of atrocities past -- and speaking out against evil in the present.
"Speaking Truth to Power: Sophie Scholl and the White Rose," is a multimedia lecture and presentation scheduled for Sunday, April 14, at 7 p.m. at Temple Israel of Riverhead by Dr. Jud Newborn.
Based on his new book, "Sophie Scholl and the White Rose," companion to the 2006 Oscar-nominated film, Sophie Scholl: The Final Days," Newborn is slated to recount the story of German Christian university students — and some former Hitler Youth fanatics — who transformed to become heroes of the German anti-Nazi resistance.
Using music, photographs, and story-telling, Newborn will discuss the power of the White Rose as role models today in the struggle against bias, fanaticism, anti-Semitism, genocide and threats to democracy abroad and at home.
Relating the story to today’s current events, Newborn will shed light the fight for freedom and shared humanity.
