How Will Downtown Fare in 2013?

We saw what happened in 2012. What will happen this year?

The year 2012 saw several gains in downtown Riverhead.

The downtown corridor was named to the National Register of Historic Places, several new businesses came to Main Street – among them, Twin Forks Bicycle, Ralph's Italian Ices and Blue Duck Bakery – and construction continued on the Suffolk Theater and Summerwind, a mixed-use building on Peconic Avenue that will feature 52 units of affordable housing and retail.

In the closing days of the year,  to target further revitalization.

On the other side, crime continued to rear its head downtown.

Three teens were arrested in March for reportedly mugging a man for a bag of food. In September, two separate prostitution busts were made around the downtown area. Barth's Drug Store was held up at gunpoint in November, and just days ago, a couple was robbed at knifepoint in broad daylight while walking down East Main Street.

So what one sees downtown might depend on what's happened there recently or a range of other things.

What we're curious about is where you see downtown heading this upcoming year. How do you think will it fare in 2013? What do you want to see done? What would you like to be able to do there in a year that you can't do now?

I've done a lot in my life but I've never been mugged or robbed at gunpoint. it's the same old story in downtown Riverhead. The new businesses are great but if you don't feel safe they will come and go. Sad, so sad!!

Thanks for commenting beardedwonder - please refrain from using profanity though. I had to delete the comment because of it. - Joe

Downtown will falter as long as we have the same people in charge. They only have their own personnal agenda's on their minds!
