UPDATE: Night Construction to Begin on Route 25

Construction by the State Department of Transportation will cause delays and detours in downtown Riverhead.

The New York State Department of Transportation is set to begin nighttime road work on Route 25 for about the next three weeks, according to a statement from the department.

The five-mile long resurfacing project from Raynor to Howell will force road closures and detours, said Eileen Peters, spokesperson for the NYS DoT.

Road work will take place from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m., Sunday through Thursday for the next three weeks, Peters said. Westbound traffic will be detoured to Route 58 during the night construction periods. Eastbound traffic will still be routed along Riverhead Main Street and drivers will experience delays.

"Either way it's a good idea to take an alternate route," Peters said. "It is going to be slow during the active construction area." Peters said this phase in the area's road construction should be completed in three weeks, weather permitting, and added that the entire road construction should be wrapped up by the end of November.

Parking along the street will not be allowed during construction, and daytime construction will continue. Peters said the state caused this phase of construction to run overnight to minimize the impact of delays on drivers and local businesses.

The project, when completed, will include upgraded storm runoff drainage, repainted pavement markings and smoothed, repaved roads, Peters said.
