Poice Chief Concerned About Coming High Tide

Says tide should be five to seven feet above normal.

With a high tide approaching at 11 a.m. and thousands of Riverhead residents already out of power, Riverhead Police Chief David Hegermiller said he's concerned about low-lying spots in town as Hurricane Irene makes its way through Long Island.

"Anyplace tied to the coastline, that is a low-lying concern for us," Hegermiller said on Sunday morning. He pointed out specifically Creek Road in Wading River and the end of Edwards Avenue in Calverton, off the top of his head.

Hegermiller reported downed power lines on Peconic Bay Boulevard, Northville Turnpike and Union Avenue, and Dolphin Way.

At the Riverhead High School, Red Cross volunteers planned on taking precautions and moving all guests away from the windows. Shelter manager Kent Terchunian said that 300 people were on site at the shelter.

"All things considered, we're doing pretty well," said Supervisor Sean Walter.
